Why Choose GSU as Your Patio Builder?
The Paver Installation Process
Sinking, cracking, and wobbly pavers usually trace back to a thin or loose base, and that’s where a low bid tends to save money. Our leadership holds degrees in horticulture, agronomy, and turf management, so we know the soil under a patio as well as the patio itself. Our paver installers mark the layout, set the finished height against the house and lawn, and dig down to firm ground, sloping the soil so rain drains away from your foundation. Crushed stone goes in one layer at a time, and the crew compacts each layer before adding the next, so the patio stays level through Virginia’s freeze-thaw winters. A screeded sand bed comes next, then the pavers in the pattern you chose, with edge pieces cut to fit curves and steps. Edge restraints hold the outer rows in place, and compacted joint sand locks the surface together and keeps weeds out.
Service That Stays With You
Your proposal lists the square footage, paver style, walls, steps, and cleanup before anyone breaks ground. One point of contact manages your project from the first design conversation to the final walkthrough, when we repair any lawn or beds we disturbed and walk the finished patio with you. Your point of contact stays reachable after the last paver is set.
Design and Build Under One Roof
A paver patio should look as good ten years from now as it did the week the crew packed up. We design each patio around your home and how you plan to use it, whether that’s a landing off the back door, a patio under a pergola, or a stand-alone gathering spot in the yard. The same team installs the paver walkways, pool decks, fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, sitting walls, steps, and outdoor kitchens around it, along with the plantings and landscape lighting, so every piece is planned as part of one space.
What a Paver Patio Costs in Richmond & Williamsburg
Every paver patio we install is custom. Price depends on the size and shape of the space, the paver or natural stone you pick, how easily equipment can reach the site, and how much grading and drainage work the ground needs. Sitting walls, steps, fire features, and lighting add to the total. For a sense of where projects typically land, see our pricing guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Price moves with square footage, the material you choose, site access, and the grading and drainage your lot needs. A small, simple patio costs far less than a large one with sitting walls and a fire pit. Our paver patio cost guide covers typical ranges, and your proposal lists the full scope.
Most residential patios take several days to a couple of weeks on site, depending on size, materials, and add-ons like walls or steps. Weather and the amount of excavation matter too. Once you approve the proposal, we give you a timeline and keep you updated as the work moves along.
That depends on the base. Virginia’s clay holds water and moves with freeze-thaw cycles, so we excavate to firm ground, install and compact a gravel base in layers, and grade for drainage before any pavers go down. If a section ever settles, we can lift and reset the pavers piece by piece, which is one reason we favor them over poured concrete.
Pavers usually cost more up front, but they handle ground movement better and can be repaired one section at a time. Concrete costs less to pour and tends to crack as clay soil shifts. Our pavers vs. concrete guide compares cost, looks, and durability.
Yes. Our Richmond paver installers work in Glen Allen and in Henrico neighborhoods like Short Pump, Tuckahoe, Innsbrook, and Wyndham, plus Midlothian, Bon Air, and Brandermill in Chesterfield County and Manakin-Sabot in Goochland. Our Williamsburg crews cover Williamsburg, Toano, and James City County. If you aren’t sure your address is in range, call (804) 514-4610 or (757) 903-5063.
Often, yes. Many communities around Midlothian, Glen Allen, and Short Pump, along with James City County neighborhoods like Kingsmill and Ford’s Colony, want sign-off on patios, walls, and drainage changes before work starts. We review your community’s guidelines at the site visit and help prepare what the board needs.
Yes. We build sitting walls, steps, fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, and paver walkways, and we install low-voltage landscape lighting. These features are much easier to plan in from the start than to retrofit later.
Yes. Sunken or uneven pavers can usually be lifted, rebased, and reset without tearing out the whole patio. We look at the damage during the site visit and quote the repair.
