Why Choose GSU?
Custom Designs
No two properties are the same, so no two installs are either. Our designers shape the plan around how you use your yard and how the house sits on the lot, whether that means a patio for weekend entertaining, planting beds that frame the architecture, or fixing a bare, shaded stretch where grass has never taken. The layout is drawn for your property, not pulled from a catalog.
A Science-Based Approach
Landscaping is an art, but it’s just as much a science. We lean on horticulture to choose the right plants for Richmond-area growing conditions: heavy Piedmont clay, how water drains across your property, the trees already on site, and the foundation lines of the house. Central Virginia sits in the transition zone, so we match plants to our zone-7 summers and clay soil rather than forcing in something that won’t hold. Our designers and installers train with the Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association (VNLA) on planting practices that help what we put in the ground survive its first summer and beyond.
Year-Round Services
A landscape keeps changing through the year, and keeping it healthy takes steady attention. Our maintenance plans cover that after the install is done, so the yard you paid for stays the yard you have. We match the plan to your property. A few of the services include lawn mowing, weeding, mulching, and seasonal cleanups

Frequently Asked Questions
Installation is quoted per project, since cost depends on the size of the area, the plants and materials you choose, how much grading and drainage work the site needs, and features like patios or walls. The best starting point is a free estimate, and our instant estimator and pricing page give you a sense of the range before we meet.

Yes. Most Richmond-area yards sit on heavy Piedmont clay that compacts and drains slowly, so we grade for drainage, amend beds where the soil needs it, and choose plants that handle our zone-7 summers. Getting the soil and grading right at install is what keeps the planting healthy for years.
It depends on the scope. New planting beds or a sod install often wrap up in a day or two, while a larger project with grading, drainage work, patios, or walls can take several days. After we walk the property and check site access, your proposal lays out a realistic timeline before any work begins.
Spring and fall are the strongest windows in Central Virginia. Cooler temperatures and steadier moisture give roots time to settle before summer heat or winter cold sets in. Our zone-7 climate still lets us plant through much of the year with the right care, so the best time is usually whenever your project is ready, and we’ll point out anything seasonal when we meet.
Not always. Small planting or sod jobs can go straight to install. For bigger changes, laying out the space first saves money and rework, so we pair installation with our landscape design service when a project calls for it. If you already have a plan you like, we can install from that too.
Watering is the biggest factor in the first season, especially through a Central Virginia summer. You’ll get a simple watering schedule at handoff, and our guide to watering new plants covers it in more detail. Many homeowners also add a maintenance plan so the same crew keeps an eye on the new landscape as it fills in.
