Why Choose GSU?
Mulch at the Depth Plants Want
Our leadership holds degrees in horticulture, agronomy, and turf management, so we mulch for plant health first and curb appeal second. We lay mulch at the right depth, usually a couple of inches, because piling it too thick suffocates roots and holds moisture against stems. And we never build “mulch volcanoes” against tree trunks, a common mistake that invites rot and pests. Done right, mulch holds moisture, blocks weeds, and feeds the soil as it breaks down.
A Clean Edge Makes the Difference
Fresh mulch only looks sharp if the beds are edged clean first. We cut a crisp, defined line between your beds and lawn, clear out weeds and debris, then lay the mulch evenly so the whole yard reads as cared-for. The edge is the part most crews rush, and it’s the part you notice from the street.
On a Plan or a One-Time Refresh
Mulching is built into both of our maintenance plans as an annual refresh, so your beds get topped off every spring without a phone call. Prefer to handle it as a single job? We’ll come out for a one-time mulch whenever your beds need it. Either way, you get the same clean edges and proper depth.

How Mulching Fits Your Maintenance Plan
Mulching is part of GSU’s property maintenance, and it works two ways:
- Included in both the Garden Care Package and the Total Maintenance Package as an annual edging and mulch refresh of your existing beds, so your mulch gets renewed each spring as part of the plan.
- Available as a one-time service if you’d rather just have your beds mulched once, without signing on for ongoing care.
For the full breakdown of what each plan includes, see our Landscape Maintenance page.

Frequently Asked Questions
For most beds, once a year does it, and spring is the sweet spot in this region, right as new growth starts. Mulch breaks down over the season, so an annual top-off keeps beds looking fresh and the layer doing its job. On a maintenance plan, we handle that refresh every spring so you don’t have to schedule it.
You pick. The common choices here are shredded hardwood, pine bark, and dyed mulch in black or brown for a cleaner, longer-lasting color. Pine straw is an option for certain beds too. We’ll talk through what holds up best for your plants and the look you’re after, then match it.
Usually we top off. Old mulch breaks down into the soil and feeds it, so adding a fresh layer on top each year is the healthier and more economical route. But if mulch has built up too thick over several years, we’ll pull some out first, since an over-mulched bed holds too much moisture against roots and stems and can do more harm than good.
Either works. If you want your beds mulched once with no ongoing commitment, we’ll come out and do a one-time refresh. If you’d rather it happen automatically every spring, mulching is included in both our maintenance plans. Same clean edges and proper depth on either path.
Mulch itself isn’t a termite magnet, but piling it deep against your foundation or siding gives pests a damp path indoors. We keep mulch pulled back from the house, hold it to the right depth, and keep it off wood siding and trim. Placed correctly, it does far more good for your beds than harm to your home.
