Why Choose GSU?
The Right Plants in the Right Places
Our leadership holds degrees in horticulture, agronomy, and turf management, which matters more around a pool than most people expect. We choose plants that won’t drop litter into the water, won’t lift your deck with aggressive roots, and hold up to splash-out and full sun. Then we grade and drain the area so runoff moves away from the pool and the house, not toward them.
Service That Stays With You
You won’t get handed off to a stranger halfway through. One point of contact walks your project from the first design conversation to the final walkthrough, and can coordinate timing with your pool builder so the two crews aren’t tripping over each other.
One Cohesive Space, Not a Patchwork
We design and install, so your pool deck, plantings, privacy screen, lighting, and drainage come together as one space instead of a string of disconnected projects. When a pool builder leaves a yard full of bare graded dirt, we’re who turns it back into a finished backyard.
Pricing
What Pool Landscaping Costs in Richmond & Williamsburg
Every pool landscaping project is custom, so pricing depends on the size and material of the deck, how much planting and privacy screening you want, the drainage and grading the yard needs, and the shape the lot is in after the pool went in. Lighting, walls, and fire features factor in too. For a sense of where projects typically land, see our pricing guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, and it’s one of the most common reasons homeowners call us. A pool install usually leaves behind bare graded dirt, ruts from equipment, and no plantings. We come in afterward to regrade, restore drainage, build out the deck or patio, add privacy screening, and plant the beds, so the backyard looks like one again.
Around water, plant choice matters. We lean toward low-litter species that won’t constantly drop leaves, flowers, or seed pods into the pool, plants without aggressive roots that could lift a deck, and varieties that shrug off splash-out and full sun. For privacy, evergreen screens like arborvitae and hollies block sightlines from neighbors without adding mess to the water.
Drainage is where a lot of pool yards run into trouble, especially over Richmond’s clay soil. We grade the surrounding area so splash-out, rain, and overflow move away from the pool and the foundation rather than collecting against them. On lots that need more help, we add drainage lines or a dry creek to carry water off to a better spot.
Yes. The pool area is often the centerpiece of a larger outdoor space. We build sitting walls, fire pits and fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, and low-voltage landscape lighting that keeps the pool usable and safe after dark. It’s far easier to plan these in from the start than to retrofit them once the deck is set.
