Why Choose GSU?
The Base Is Everything
Our leadership holds degrees in horticulture, agronomy, and turf management, so the ground a patio sits on is familiar territory. In Virginia’s clay soil, a patio is only as good as the base under it. We excavate, grade, and compact correctly so your patio drains the way it should and stays put instead of sinking or shifting a few winters in.
Service That Stays With You
You won’t get handed off to a stranger halfway through. One point of contact walks your project from the first design conversation to the final walkthrough, and stays reachable after the last paver is set.
Design and Build Under One Roof
We design and install, so your patio, sitting walls, fire feature, plantings, and lighting come together as one cohesive space instead of a patchwork of subcontractors.
Pricing
What a Patio Costs in Richmond & Williamsburg
Every patio we build is custom, so pricing depends on the size and shape of the space, the paver or stone you choose, site access, and how much grading and drainage the ground needs before we set a single paver. Sitting walls, steps, fire features, and lighting factor in too. For a sense of where projects typically land, see our pricing guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Because every patio is custom, the price moves with the square footage, the material you pick, site access, and the grading and drainage the lot needs. A small, simple patio and a large one with sitting walls and a fire feature sit at very different points. Our pricing guide gives a sense of typical ranges, and your proposal will spell out the full scope.
Most residential patios take several days to a couple of weeks on site, depending on size, materials, and add-ons like walls or steps. Weather and how much excavation the ground needs both play a part. Once you approve the proposal, we’ll give you a clear timeline and keep you posted as the work moves along.
That comes down to the base, and the base is where a lot of patios go wrong in this region. Virginia’s clay holds water and moves with freeze-thaw cycles, so we excavate to the right depth, install and compact a proper gravel base, and grade for drainage before any pavers go down. Built right, a paver patio can be re-leveled or repaired piece by piece down the road, which is one reason we favor it over poured concrete.
Often, yes. Many HOA communities around Midlothian, Glen Allen, and Short Pump want sign-off on outdoor projects like patios, sitting walls, and drainage changes before work begins. We’ll review your community’s guidelines during the site visit and help prepare whatever the board needs to approve the plan.
Yes. A patio is often the starting point for a larger outdoor space. We build sitting walls, steps, fire pits and fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, walkways, and low-voltage landscape lighting, and it’s far easier to plan those in from the start than to retrofit them later.
