We had an erosion problem with our yard and spoke to several landscaping companies about a solution. Green Side Up came up with a very creative solution and we are thrilled with the results. They were courteous and very professional. I would recommend them to anyone.

Exceptional customer service and work. They take care of everything -- mowing, edging, mulch, leaf removal, aerating and overseeding. I get a lot of compliments from neighbors on my yard. They also coordinate with Virginia Green to make sure weed control and fertilizer don't conflict with the work GSU is doing that week.

I really like having my weekends free. Definitely worth it.

Why Choose GSU?

  • Cut Height Decides Everything

Most lawns in this region are tall fescue, and fescue wants to be cut high, in the range of three and a half to four inches. Our leadership holds degrees in horticulture, agronomy, and turf management, so that’s how we set the decks. Tall grass shades the soil, keeps roots deep, holds moisture through a July dry spell, and crowds out crabgrass before it germinates. Cut the same lawn short and you get the opposite: shallow roots, bare soil, weeds. We also take no more than a third of the blade in a single pass and keep the blades sharp, because a dull blade tears the tips instead of cutting them and leaves the lawn looking brown a day later.

  • Service That Stays With You

You won’t get a rotating cast of crews learning your property from scratch every week. We run two-person crews with a team leader and keep the same team on your lawn as much as we can, so they know where the sprinkler heads are, which corner stays wet, and how you like the lines run. One point of contact handles your account and stays reachable through the season.

  • The Cleanup Is Part of the Cut

Anyone can run a mower over a lawn. The difference shows up in the last ten minutes of the visit. Every driveway, walkway, patio, deck, and porch gets blown off before the crew leaves, so the property looks finished rather than dusted in clippings. We also vary the mowing direction week to week, which keeps the wheels from wearing ruts into the same lines and stops the grass from laying over in one direction all season.

What Lawn Mowing Costs

Mowing comes as part of our Total Maintenance Package, our full-service plan, where it runs as a required service at 32 visits through the growing season alongside bed weeding, mulching, pre-emergent, and turf fertilization. Our Garden Care Package is built for properties that want consistent bed and landscape care without lawn mowing, so if you handle the grass yourself and want help with everything else, that’s the plan to look at.

What you pay comes down to the size and layout of your lawn, how much trimming the property needs around beds and obstacles, and which optional services you add to the plan. For what each plan includes, see our Landscape Maintenance page. For a fuller cost breakdown, see our pricing guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lawn Mowing (4)
Do you offer one-time or occasional mowing?

We don’t. Mowing comes through our Total Maintenance Package on an annual agreement, and there’s a turf reason behind that beyond scheduling. A lawn cut on an irregular basis gets scalped every time, because too much blade comes off in one pass, and the grass spends the next week recovering instead of growing thick. Consistent weekly cutting is what produces a dense lawn. If your property has gotten overgrown and you’re after a single reset rather than ongoing service, our one-time landscape cleanup handles overgrowth, weeds, and debris, and it’s a good starting point if you want to see how we work before committing to a plan.

When does mowing season start and end around here?

Generally the end of March through the start of November, though both ends move with the weather rather than the calendar. We start when soil temperatures bring the grass out of dormancy and growth picks up, and we stop when it slows in late fall. That works out to 32 visits across the season on the Total Maintenance Package. Through the off-season the crews shift to leaf cleanup, winter pruning, and mulching, so your property keeps getting attention when the grass isn’t growing.

How short will you cut my grass, and do you bag the clippings?

For the tall fescue most lawns here are planted in, we mow high, around three and a half to four inches. It looks longer than a scalped lawn because it is, and that’s the point: the height is what keeps the turf dense and the crabgrass out through the summer. We leave the clippings on the lawn rather than bagging them, since they break down quickly and return nitrogen to the soil, which means less fertilizer over the season. Clippings only cause trouble when a lawn is cut too infrequently and comes off in clumps, which weekly service prevents. If your lawn is zoysia or bermuda, the right height is lower and we adjust accordingly.

Will I have the same crew, and what day will you come?

We work hard to keep the same crew on your property as much as possible, and we typically run two-person crews including a team leader. Illness, weather delays, and leaf season staffing can occasionally change that. On scheduling, we generally service commercial properties earlier in the week and residential closer to the weekend, though we group jobs that sit near each other to save fuel and time, so some residential lawns land earlier in the week. Your point of contact can tell you where your property falls in the route.

What's included in a mowing visit?

Mowing, trimming around beds, trees, and obstacles the mower can’t reach, and blowing off the hard surfaces before the crew leaves, which covers driveways, walkways, patios, decks, and porches. Bed weeding, mulching, pre-emergent applications, and turf fertilization are separate services in the Total Maintenance Package, each on their own schedule through the year, and options like pruning, aeration and overseeding, and leaf removal can be added on top.
